The ABBCC was established in 1992 to “enhance liturgies & prayer services and to present concerts throughout the Archdiocese of Boston and beyond by raising their voices in song to the Lord.” Under the direction of Mr. Meyer J. Chambers, Campus Minister for Liturgical Arts at Boston College, Music Director of St. Katharine Drexel Parish and Liturgical Music Director at St. Sebastian’s School, the choir sings uplifting and spiritual music from the Black Catholic perspective.
The 35 voice choir, whose members come from throughout the Archdiocese of Boston, has traveled to Italy, where they sang for His Holiness, (St.) Pope John Paul II in 1995. In addition to singing at churches, prisons, and homeless shelters in the Greater Boston area, the group sang at National Black Catholic Congress VIII in Baltimore, Maryland in August of 1997 and the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM) 2002 Regional Convention in Rochester, NY. The choir presents its annual concert in one of Boston’s urban parishes every year and released its first recording in April 2001. In February 2004, the ABBCC hosted its first Caribbean cruise with stops in San Juan (Puerto Rico), St. Thomas (USVI), Barbados, Dominica and Aruba. The choir tour of Ireland in February 2008 began in Dublin and ended in Galway. One of the highlights of the tour was a benefit concert for the J.F.K Trust in New Ross, the ancestral home of the Kennedy family. In 2012, the choir celebrated its 20
th anniversary with a workshop led by the renowned composer, W. Clifford Petty, and a regal gala held at Boston College High School. On Nov. 3, 2014, the choir was honored as the choir of the year at the 45
th GBOS Image Awards. The very next spring, ABBCC hosted a Boston to Bermuda cruise, May 1-8, 2015 to sing at the Cathedral of Saint Theresa of Lisieux.
