Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Eulalia Parish,
The disciples of Jesus have not only a need to hear God’s voice of calling, but also the need to open their hearts to answer the invitation that comes from Jesus. The Second Sunday readings (Yr. B) once again confirmed our commitment to continue the mission of Jesus by reaching out to our brothers and sisters (loved ones) and bringing them to Jesus Himself. After spending time with Jesus, HE will empower us as apostles with our own names (Sun 1/24).
Being with Jesus every day, we hear and experience many exciting things. Jesus is with us. During this second week of ordinary time, we come and follow Jesus to different places he intends to go. On Monday (Mk 2:18-22) we hear that “a closed mind”, like the Pharisees, refuses to learn new things and the encouraging words from Jesus to put new wine into new wineskins. When the disciples are accused of breaking the Sabbath law by the Pharisees, Jesus voices that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for Sabbath (Mk 2:23-28). We witness a miracle that Jesus cures a person with a withered hand by stretching out his hand (Mk 3:1-6). Though Jesus warns all the healed people not to publicize the miracles, they spread out the news after they return to their homes: Galilee, Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, Jordan, Tyre, and Sidon (Mk 3:7-12). Jesus’s uplifting words and great miracles have attracted a great crowd of followers. They all press upon Jesus to touch him in order to be healed. In order to meet the needs of those people, Jesus appoints 12 apostles to be with Him (Mk 13-19).
Friends, the reality is simple: how exciting for those who have been healed by Jesus and how hopeful for those who have heard of Jesus and not yet arrived to see Jesus. The Kingdom of God becomes attractive to many by Jesus’ sayings and miracles. The future seems full of life and promises. After 10 months under the dark cloud of a pandemic, we have developed a strong desire of seeing something positive and promising. We want to see our Church of St. Eulalia be filled with people again, we want to do more to educate our children in the Catholic faith, and we are eager to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Get ready, Jesus is coming to call us each by name.
God bless,
Fr. John Chen
